The Rivian R3 and R3X are two new compact electric SUVs that were recently revealed by Rivian. These vehicles are designed to be smaller and more affordable than the R1T and R1S, making them more accessible to a wider range of customers. The R3 and R3X share a platform with the R2 model, but their wheelbase is about five inches shorter. The R3 is a standard model, while the R3X is a sportier, performance-oriented version with three electric motors, wider wheels and tires, and higher ground clearance. Rivian hasn't released official specs for the R3 and R3X's batteries yet, but it is expected that they will be available with two different-sized packs – Standard and Large – with varying driving ranges depending on the powertrain. The R3 and R3X are expected to be available in the first half of 2026, with a starting price of around $45,000 for the R3. The performance-oriented R3X may have a higher price tag due to its additional features and capabilities. Both the R3 and R3X feature a sleek and modern design, with a spacious interior and a large glass roof that helps make the cabin feel airy. The front and rear seats fold flat to accommodate longer items and create a spacious area for car-camping. The user interface features expandable tiles for individual features, with the main options (navigation, media, and climate controls) always available at the bottom of the display. Instead of delving into submenus, options slide out of the side of the tiles to reduce the complexity of the system. Rivian offers a generous warranty that covers the vehicle bumper-to-bumper for five years or 60,000 miles, as well as a battery and drivetrain policy that lasts for eight years or 175,000 miles. The success of the new R3 and R3X SUVs will be critical to the future of Rivian, as the company strives to prove it can make it work amidst a global EV downturn and its own production struggles.
